Macy’s in San Francisco’s bustling Union Square  invited Pinkies Nail Salons to their exclusive launching of the b.tempt’d bra line from Wacoal on Friday, April 10. Two of our fabulous nail technicians from Pinkies Potrero Hill performed complementary mini manicures to each customer who tried on a b.tempt’d bra. Shoppers (and Pinkies staff) enjoyed tasty cookies and beverages while listening to a live DJ. We were able to meet so many new people while we gave our Mini Manicures. Pinkies loves getting out into the community and working with new and exciting companies and organizations. The event was a huge success, and we can’t work with our new friends at Macy’s again!

Hope to Health (H2H) and Hope to Health Teens (H2H) are two volunteer and philanthropic groups of the El Camino Hospital Foundation. They strive to bring women and teen health issues to light in the community as well as raise money for such services as health care for low-income women and care packets for women breast cancer patients.

On October 28, 50 women gathered at Pinkies Los Altos to learn about their health and get pampered. The program included a presentation on breast cancer risk factors, prevention, and therapetuic advances, a presentation on healthy eating tips, and a presentation on flu shots and the H1N1 virus. Dr. Vandana Sharma, Dr. Amanda Cooley, and Dr. Daniel Shim offered their expert knowledge and answered all questions.

Participants found the event not only fun, but educational and useful for their lives.

Five Architectural Jewels on CSL s 2009 Home Tour Tour Dates ~ April 24 & 25

csl-postcard-fr-09w600

On Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25, the Children s Support League of the East Bay will host its 21st annual Heart of the Home Tour. Tour proceeds  benefit non-profit charities in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties specializing in programs for at-risk children and their families.

There are six chimneys visible atop the storybook roof of one of the two central Piedmont homes on tour. Situated on a gated park-like corner lot with majestic mature trees, this 10,000 square foot English Revival mansion with Tudor influences was designed by Albert Farr in 1908. The architectural detailing in the remodeled area of the home seamlessly integrates with the original period detailing in the neighboring entrance hall and dining room. Throughout the main level of the home, exquisite antiques, custom-made furniture and window treatments, and precious area rugs have been sensitively selected and arranged by a renowned interior designer for the homeowners  comfort and enjoyment.

The second home in central Piedmont is screened from the street by a towering copse of magnificent redwood trees, so it s a surprise to discover the homeowners enjoy a splendid  downtown San Francisco skyline view through the French doors in their light-filled living room. It features an expanded new kitchen, breakfast area, family room, wet bar, full bath and powder room on the main level as well as a potting room, wine cellar and three-car garage on the lower level. The stunning two-year renovation expertly blends with the ornate period architectural detailing and sculpted arches in the original rooms of this 1920 s Tudor home, which was designed by the reputed architect Lewis Upton and solidly constructed by Axel Cederborg, a distinguished builder and contractor.

This year s tour also boasts a pristine 1926 Mediterranean home designed by William Schirmer. The present homeowners spent more than two years looking for an authentically detailed historic home in the Oakland hills before discovering this genuine period home which passed to them from the original owners  daughters who lived in this same home all their lives with original furnishings still intact.  The new owners have carefully preserved the home s rich architectural character and charm while artfully updating the kitchen and surrounding hillside landscape. The house has been conferred Level Seven Protected Status; nothing on the exterior of the home can be altered or changed without special approval from the Oakland Planning Commission.

Directly across the street from this tour home lays another home on CSL s 2009 tour. Sadly, the original Albert Farr French Normandy home on this site built in 1928 was lost in the Oakland Hills fire of 1991. But the exciting and amazing news is that the beautiful brand new  Castle  on this site completed in 2002 is an exact replica of the 1928 home. It maintains the original floorplans on the same footprint. Period details were captured from historic interior photos. A plaque on the front of the landmark home commemorates the original homeowners, the Allens, who were among the first affluent Afro-American couples to locate in the Oakland Hills. A few years ago, a renowned local architect purchased the home from the Allens  heirs and smartly reconfigured a maid s room and bath into a handsome family room, which is open to the kitchen. The current owners have further enhanced the light-filled cheerful home; the interior color palette and d cor draw the eye to the stellar panoramic Bay views.

The fifth home on the CSL 2009 tour was also built by Axel Cederborg in 1926.  Situated on the crest of a hill, this magnificent gated 7,000 plus square foot timber-framed Tudor estate offers Bay views that stretch from the San Mateo Bridge to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge from its three-story windows. The current homeowners have just completed a six-year, labor-of-love transformation of the home s interior and one-acre property. A new addition to the existing structure houses a gourmet island kitchen, breakfast room and butler s pantry on the main level, a son s bedroom with loft playroom on the second level, and a spacious bonus room/guest area on the third level. Every surface of the original interior has been scrupulously reappointed. The estate makeover also features a new 1,000 square foot guest cottage, an outdoor kitchen with wood-burning pizza oven, and outdoor fireplace.  The newly landscaped grounds, irrigated by reclaimed water, also include an infinity edge pool which spills over a bronze fountain to a lap pool below it. The lower pool is surrounded by a sun-drenched limestone terrace overlooking San Francisco Bay.

Tickets for CSL s 21st Annual Heart of the Home Tour are available at $40 each ($50 with lunch) in advance. Tickets are available on the days of the tour at the Piedmont Community Center, 711 Highland Avenue, Piedmont 94611 for $45 each ($58 with lunch). For more information, contact CSL at 510-338-4521. In this economy some people have found more creative approaches to reaching new customers. A bit over the top is Paul Saad of Merrill Lynch who recently hosted his Financial Planning Seminar at Pinkies Nail Salons in Danville, Ca.
Paul and his associates held in information packed evening for 15 pre-registered women on “Financial Planning for Women” complete with scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, wine and deserts. When word got out, the event was fully booked in hours!
While his guests received Pinkies Pedi’s they were educated on the intricacies of financial planning. The group asked very good, direct questions and got relevant answers. Guest came away educated and much more knowledgeable about their finances.

No alcohol, caffeine, sugar, chemicals, bad fats, unhealthy meats, nightshades, gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, etc. Excuse me, but that just about covers every food group as far as I’m concerned.

When my partner Connie called and announced “we” were signed up for a bio-cleanse I thought, “fine, I could lose a few pounds anyway.” That was the last time we spoke about it until we met with Dr. Amy Day of San Francisco Natural Medicine just down the street from our Pinkies location on Potrero Hill.

Dr. Amy had 14 participants lined up and announced she too would “cleanse” with the group. We went around the room introducing ourselves and talking about our individual goals. The stories were all pretty familiar. Too much of a good, or delicious, thing isn’t good for you. We all know this but sometimes a bad habit isn’t all that bad, right? And what the heck is a nightshade anyway?

After the orientation, Connie and I raced off to Whole Foods with our grocery lists filled with items we couldn’t pronounce. We stood there staring into bulk food bins when a perky store employee approached and asked if we were participating in the cleanse. “We only have one bottle of bentonite left and we are out of Castor Oil,” she said excitedly. This forced us to move into immediate supermarket sweeps mode. Connie dashed off leaving me with two shopping carts and desperately scanning ingredients on every item.

That evening, Connie had me over for dinner. It was our last night of food freedom for 10 days so we did it up. Cheeses, bread, wine, Indian food, and more wine. It was wonderful.

By cleanse day 2 we were both feeling the effects of caffeine deprivation. During our frequent phone conversations I wasn’t sure if Connie was continually repeating herself, I was hearing double, or if she was intentionally trying to annoy me. Another couple of days passed and we were off and running. The great part about Dr. Amy’s plan is that she uses full body approach to the cleanse process. It was not a diet so we never felt starved!

The key to a successful cleanse is to get back in touch with your body and learn something(s)about yourself. I discovered that my diet was not in any way related to my chronic insomnia and that eating on a regular schedule is key to staying trim. Both Connie and I learned that eating and drinking is more of social experience for us. We enjoy the company and, trust me, it’s gets lonely eating a special diet for 10 days. If you are planning to cleanse do it with a friend or in a group. “The allowed foods get rather boring,” says Connie, “so you’ll want o swap recipes with a friend.” She also goes on record that it was me who was annoying her around day 2!

Both of us agree that our eating habits have improved as a result of the cleanse and we highly recommend this to anyone who is feeling a little toxic. You will have done something really good for yourself not to mention your liver. If we can do it, you can too.

So what is a nightshade vegetable you ask? Foods in the Potato, Tomato, Pepper, and Eggplant families contain naturally occurring toxins. These toxins may or may not be problematic for patients but all potential toxins are removed from the diet during this cleanse.

For more information go to http://www.sfnatmed.com/ and, as Dr. Amy says, “love your liver and be well.”

Bouquets to Art is the largest fundraiser benefitting the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Connie Kullberg and Derik Landry look forward to this event every year. This year’s magnificent installation is at the de Young in Golden Gate Park.
There are nearly 150 floral exhibitions in the museum galleries during the weeklong event. The “bouquets” are inspired by and displayed next to works of art.
This year floral designer, friend, and client Emily Dreblow (http://www.soulflowersf.com/) created an orginal masterpiece for this event.
Bouquets to Art raises funds for special exhibitions, acquisitions, and education programs. For more information visit them at http://www.bouquetstoart.org/ .
