News and more about beauty and the Bay Area

Alright, yes, I get it! Okay, I get it. The economy sucks, everything sucks, rainbows don’t exist anymore, blah blah blah. Okay, not everything sucks and rainbows may still exist, but you get the idea. I don’t know about any of you guys, but I am fed up with hearing about people blame all of their problems on the economy. Sure, each penny we find on the ground now seems to be a but more valuable, but what’s wrong with that? We may have to buy the safeway brand pasta sauce rather than the delicious creamy Classico vodka pasta sauce (yum, maybe I’ll splurge on that one), but we always have to remember that changes are never bad, they’re just different. Naturally, of course! Different things are just different. Let’s open our minds to see the beauty there is in change! Open ourselves to the abundance that is the universe!

With that, I wanted to show you all some money saving beauty tips,

brownsuga1) Exfoliate with sweetener. Simply by mixing brown sugar and honey, you have MacGyvered your very own exfoliating scrub. Let’s face it – exfoliaters are an absolute must for healthy and smooth skin but they always seem to burn a hole in your pocket every time you run out! Mix these two common household products and voila! Smooth, healthy skin without the dollar signs. (Cosmopolitan)

2) Use Johnson’s Baby Shampoo as Eye Make up Remover I am a firm believer that one of the worst feelings in the world is waking up with crusty raccoon eyes. This simple trick is not only economical, but it is awesome! Who knew? (Cosmopolitan)

3) Use an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse to Brighten your Hair We are all well aware that our lovely San Francisco has a bit less than lovely summers, but our hair doesn’t need to reflect that. Instead, throw some apple cider vinegar in your hair as a rinse and let it reflect the sun rather than the lack of sun. (Cosmopolitan)
4) Out of Something? Try mixing old ones!

  • Use toothpaste or OTC cortisone cream on blemishes (eye drops can get the red out of them, as well)
  • Dab a bit of olive oil on very rough/dry patches of skin
  • Out of de-puffing eye cream? Chill a couple of spoons in the freezer and place over your eyes
  • Use canola oil as a cheap hot oil hair treatment
  • Try sesame oil for stretch marks

5) Try shellac manicures rather than just manicures! ItShellac-Manicure-225319_image may seem a bit shameless, as we are Pinkies Nail Salon’s blog, but economically speaking, a shellac manicure is the best way to have the longest lasting look on your nails (especially if your nails are already healthy and beautiful.)  Shellac lasts for a solid 14 days, seriously. No more annoying attempts to fix your nails with white out after 2 days, this stuff actually works.

Fall is right around the corner ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to buckle in that summer tan and paint your nails to match. Unsure about which color is going to look the best? We’ve got news for you! the newly introduced Swiss Collection by OPI are the perfect colors for the upcoming season. Whether you like to let your inner diva sparkle through with colors like “Glitzerland” (Pictured below) or you would rather stay mellow with the navy tealish color “Ski Teal we Drop,” (also pictured below) OPI has the perfect fall colors for your hands and toes.

Macy’s in San Francisco’s bustling Union Square  invited Pinkies Nail Salons to their exclusive launching of the b.tempt’d bra line from Wacoal on Friday, April 10. Two of our fabulous nail technicians from Pinkies Potrero Hill performed complementary mini manicures to each customer who tried on a b.tempt’d bra. Customers who purchased an item from the b.temp’d line received a Pinkies gift card.

b.tempt’d is a new collection of bras and underwear from Wacoal with a young and hip spirit. There are so many colors and patterns to choose from–all fun and flirty.

Shoppers (and Pinkies staff) enjoyed tasty cookies and beverages while listening to a live DJ. We were able to meet so many new people while we gave our Mini Manicures. Pinkies loves getting out into the community and working with new and exciting companies and organizations. The event was a huge success, and we can’t work with our new friends at Macy’s again!

Shape

Nails should be less rounded, and more square…think “squoval.” They should be filed following the natural nail line.

Color

This season’s colors are BOLD, as shown in the latest runway fashions. Try out dark reds, pretty plums, rich purples, and navy blues. Pinkies has a lovely OPI purple perfect for this winter-”Louvre Me, Louvre Me Not.”  Take some fashion-forward risks and try dark browns and dark oranges. Copper and grey tones are also on the rise, as seen on actress, Blake Lively.

If these trends don’t appeal to you, just remember, it’s all about matching your nails to your own personal style. Healthy nails of any shape and color are always in style!

Your wedding is a really big deal to you and to us. Regardless of your taste and personal style, your nails will be on stage with you. Everyone wants to see you ring, and it is captured in photos forever. We’d like to be in know on all you can do with your special wedding nails.

Many choose a beautiful French Manicure. What you may not know is you can decide the type of pink and the type of white colors for your French Manicure. Options range from sharp to subtle, pinks to grays-oh the possibilities! This makes French Manicures our most popular bridal option…even for brides who never considered themselves “French Manicure” types. A fun alternative is an American manicure: white on the nail bed and the pink on the tip. Again, the color choices are many…extreme to subtle.

If a French manicure isn’t your style, we recommend a sheer polish treatment. We have so many options here from clear to silver to every soft pink you can image. This polish treatment includes a base coat, two layers of soft color, and top coat. Your entire nail surface will be the same color. We recommend this option for brides concerned about chips because chips are much less visible with light sheer colors.

blog-wedding-nails11Of course, you can always go with a bold color. We always apply a basecoat, two layers of polish, and  a top coat to help set the polish. If you do not regularly get nail treatments a deep color option can be risky for your wedding day. Polish takes hours to cure, and it could ding and dent if you are active. If you are set on a deep dark and beautiful color you must be aware of your nails. We want your day to be perfect too!

At Pinkies we offer color alternatives for those who prefer a no-color treatment. Even when you don’t want color, you can still get trimmed cuticles and shaped nails on your special day. Clear polish or a fabulous buff will leave your nails picture perfect.

Our Deluxe treatments include a massage and will fully moisturize your hands and feet. Deluxe Pedicures feature a fragrant exfoliating scrub that leaves your feet and lower legs smooth and glowing as well as a 10 minute lower leg and foot massage that will relieve you from stress. Deluxe Pedicures allow you to soak your hands and nails in warm oil and lotion and also include a massage.

Note to Maids and Matrons of Honor: we honor you. We’ve learned many things over the years, and at the top of the list is don’t mess with you. Let’s face it, you couldn’t love your bride more. You are under stress, on stage and responsible for your bride until she leaves for her honeymoon. Stay prepared for any emergency by picking up a bottle of your bride’s polish color (tip color for French) before you leave Pinkies. We will make this easy for as we are here to assist you. You matter to us too and want you to feel pampered.

The groom MUST get his nails done, too. Pinkies is hardly too frilly for men. We’ve been providing men’s nail care for years and men are a common site in our salons, and we take care of our guys just like we care for you. His hands are photographed with yours so his cuticles must be trimmed, nails clipped, shaped and perfectly buffed. A pedicure is also a nice touch for him on the Big Day. You see those feet…and wouldn’t clean, trimmed, filed and buffed toe nails on him make the honeymoon a little sweeter? We think so…

What better way to get ready for the isle than to book a party at Pinkies the night before or the day of? We can accomodate as many people as you need. Simply visit our website and fill out a party form.
