Polka dots and stripes, Aztec print and florals, mixing and matching prints is not something that we would normally call fashionable, in fact, there was a time when we would be apt to call those pairings tragic, but the time has come for the mix and match look to have its’ time in the sun, and no that is not a typo! Individuality is having a moment in fashion right now, DIY looking styles are reigning everywhere from high fashion runways to Etsy online shops; being yourself has never been so trendsetting! Gone are the days of jumping on the bandwagon to replicate the ‘hot right now’ looks; mixing, layering, color blocking, you name it, you can do it. It seems as though we are going through a transition fashion wise right now, a no rules kind of moment if you will, and we love it!
For those that are hesitant to try this bold new look, we certainly don’t blame you, it can be a lot to take in; yet really anyone can pull this off,
and there are some serious pros that outweigh the cons. First off, remember that fashion is supposed to be fun! Mixing colors and patterns can be lovely, wear a striped top with a floral maxi skirt and you are guaranteed to be the brightest in the room! The addition of a belt with a look like this or of the same caliber would break up the patterns evenly and give your waist some nice definition. Speaking of definition, pairing a patterned top with something of a high waisted nature on the bottom does wonders for your figure! Does it get much better than that?
The very thought of ‘more is more’ can be quite out of the box for some ladies, but not to worry, we can always do a little less with the ensemble, keeping your accessories and shoes simple will definitely help to accomplish this. Yet, don’t be afraid to have fun with say, some large sunglasses or floppy hat! Lastly, let us not forget that it is pretty much officially summer now, which means that this is the best time of year to wear bright colors, making this trend so very on point! So what do we think, is more, in fact, more for you?
Spring has officially sprung here in the bay area, which can only mean one thing for fashion, florals are everywhere right now! It seems we can’t turn more than a couple pages in our ever present fashion magazine collection here in the salons without seeing another fabulous floral print. There is something so refreshing about this particular print, maybe it is the fact that it means summer is fast approaching and we get excited? Whatever the reason, one way to wear this trend that we are paying extra special attention to is in the form of pants or shorts, too cute!
Sure, you can wear a pretty floral dress or skirt any day of the week and probably be guaranteed to be the cutest girl in the room, but what about giving your wardrobe a little extra pizzazz? Rocking these colorful bottoms is sure to do just that! Getting into a pair of adorable floral shorts and a breezy tee shirt is perfect for those days out at the park; adding some mid length boots even gives it that perfect combination of
edgy/girly style. However, we are really into the floral pants look, there are just so many different ways that you can showcase them! Whether it be a great pair of printed jeans, or some Capri length floral trousers, you can wear this staple virtually anywhere; at work, home, even dress them up for a date night!
What is so easy and great about floral bottoms, is that you can keep the rest of your look cool and casual. A simple tee or tunic paired with some of your favorite t-strap sandals keeps the look eye catching without making it too busy; you can even throw on a blazer or a cute cardigan to make for office appropriate attire, but don’t forget to keep your nails in the loop too! This is the best time of year to try out or vast array of bright and springy colors!
When it comes to your footwear, is the sky really the limit nowadays? Everywhere you turn, whether it be on the catwalk or sidewalk, it seems that shoes keep trying to reach the sun! Do we blame the queen of uncomfortable fashion, Gaga herself? Or can this trend be traced all the way back to Carrie Bradshaw and her signature Manolos? No matter where it began, one thing is for certain, shoes keep getting higher and higher, and sooner or later, we’ll all fall down!
Celebs make it look easy. We’ve all seen them; Victoria Beckham, Blake Lively, Jessica Simpson, all running to their local Starbucks in sky high stilettos. While we would love the thought of looking that glamorous on our everyday coffee run, truth is, those of us that have to work in heels usually put them on when we get to the office, or am I the only one in sneakers and dresses on the bus? Maybe I am; the NPD group recently released a study last year saying that women spent 38.5 billion in shoes, and half of those were shoes over three inches high! Wow ladies!
Your standard luxury heel, the Ferragamos and Blahniks, are generally 5 inches high, and this is the height (and even higher) that is usually seen on designer runways, like the Alexander McQueen pair seen here. This isn’t far out fashion anymore either, mass retailers like H&M and Macy’s are putting their share of crazy wedges/heels out into the world; case in point, did anyone else get the Jeffrey Campbell ‘Litas’ that were so popular last season? The popularity of these high heels begs the question, is it worth the risk?
Besides the very real possibility of a twisted ankle or broken foot, it just is not healthy to basically walk on your toes with your heel arched so high, this can lead to back and hip problems! The higher your heel actually is, well, the longer you’re inevitable at some point fall will be. So, what’s the verdict ladies, are you a diehard fan of the ‘crazy heel’ trend, or will you be sitting this one out?
When it comes to holidays throughout the year, none are more relaxing than Easter. Think about it, Christmas can be crazy, after Thanksgiving you can’t button your jeans; but not Easter. Every year, come that Sunday in April we can all get dressed up in pretty pastels, attend brunches or barbeques with family and friends and just generally relax and watch the kids run around looking for their healthy snack in egg form. Whatever your personal tradition may be, we definitely all have one thing in common right now, what is going to constitute our Sunday best, and how can we avoid looking like an Easter egg ourselves?
For some, this may mean pulling out your old faithful floral sun dress for some exposure, and really, you cannot go wrong with this one. Pair the cute garment with some tights and maybe an oversize sun hat and you are instantly a lady who lunches! The added bonus here? You can eat as many peeps as you want, no waistband! So, let’s say you are not the kind of girl who crushes on the floral trend, you can still incorporate pastels into your look. Working with a color block dress on Easter will give you the opportunity to don a simple comfy dress with spots of festive color without going overboard and wearing all out baby pink or teal. Win win
right?
As for the ladies who are more comfortable in pants, this is the perfect instance to try out the latest colored jeans trend, a mint green or light blue would keep you looking season appropriate, and you could always pair it with a casual tunic and blazer to add a bit of an extra kick to the look. Sweet and sleek!
As always, accessories can also go a very long way with an ensemble. Popping on some bright bangles, colored sunglasses, or finally using that very pink designer clutch that you never have a reason to bring out, could all be the focal point of your Sunday fun day outfit. Of course, your outfit is rarely complete without a little pampering with a manicure or pedicure; show your pinkies some love by coming into Pinkies and picking out your favorite OPI or Essie color! Happy
Easter ladies!
How many tech objects do you have in your home? Be honest! Let’s count, most likely there is a laptop and/or PC, an Ipad and pod, MP3 Player, maybe even a Kindle in there; point being, the list could go on and on. Now try this one on for size, how many digital prints do you have in your…wardrobe? Yes, that’s right, techy prints are the latest and greatest craze on the spring runways; designers like Gwen Stefani and Jeremy Scott are providing us with fab fashions in digital prints we actually want to wear! Since fashion is more often than not recycled from previous decades of fashion, it is a bit refreshing to see something practically brand new out there, don’t you agree?
If you are the kind of gal who enjoys making a statement with her ensemble, then the digi print trend is just about perfect for you! Patterns ranging from pretty ikat, tiny graphics, to just all around mod; these prints are fun and different for the spring/summer season ahead. Incorporate this into your wardrobe in the form of a retroactive mini dress, or go for the gold with a pair of patterned pants! Not exactly your style? You can still try out
the trend with the addition of an oversize printed headband or grab some flats flaunting some zig zag stripes!
Obviously the key to getting this right is to let your intended piece speak for itself; your featured pattern is going to be eye catching enough, so let’s not try mixing and matching here! If you are not choosing an all over mini dress piece, keep the garment to one style; ie, a fun shirt or pair of bottoms. Even if your color palette is on the darker side, try to stay away from bright hues to avoid looking like an 80’s video character and you’re all set!
Sometimes with a larger than life trend like this less is indeed more, so what better way to incorporate a kitschy design into your life than on your nails? Coming into Pinkies for some far out nail designs could sure go a long way! One thing is for sure, no matter how you choose to style yourself, all eyes will definitely be on you!
At this point in our beauty regime, we are used to the comings and goings of the latest fads. Dark lipstick for fall, silver polish for winter! The list goes on and on every year. Yet, once in awhile, a trend sneaks up on us that we are actually excited to start wearing! This is certainly the case with bright lipstick and its’ ubiquitous presence all over the spring runways this year. Colorful shades of coral, pink and plum are popping up everywhere from this seasons designer look books to Michelle Williams gorgeous Oscar night make up! Want in on the latest and greatest way to wear your favorite shade? Of course you do!
Usually the toughest part about pulling off a new look is finding the right hue for your unique skin tone; so sticking to this simple guide will ensure you do just that. Ladies with a more porcelain complexion look best when wearing pink or orange shades; if you are of the more medium tone or olive variety, blue based light reds will look best on you. Lastly, if you have a darker skin tone, hues of plum are there for you! Following these rules and sticking to minimal eye make-up are sure to make you look as lovely as a spring time rose!
Another good rule of thumb to follow when sporting such a vibrant shade is to really let your make-up be the centerpiece of your ensemble, no crazy patterns here ladies! Keep the tonal qualities of your outfit to neutrals and let your pretty face be the focal point; a good pair of jeans and a light top are perfect for running around on the weekends, while a slim pencil skirt and button up are perfect for keeping up a bright lip around the office. Trendy, transitional and ever so tasteful, we have to say, we sure are loving this new look!
If the bright lipstick look isn’t really for you, consider letting your hands do this talking this spring! Fun shades from Essie and OPI are available here at Pinkies for your manicure pleasure. Case in point, wouldn’t this fun coral shade of Essie’s ‘Meet Me At Sunset’ look great on your pinkies? However you decide to incorporate brights into your spring time look, be sure to have fun playing around with all this gorgeous color!
It is about that time ladies, that extra fun time of year when green is your go to color. St. Patrick’s Day is right around the bend, and with spring approaching as well, there is no better time to put a vibrant pop of color into your wardrobe! Being the fabulous fashionistas that you all are, there will surely be no, ‘Kiss Me I’m Irish’ tee shirts in our midst; unless of course, you are Irish, and you well, do want to be kissed.
If you do want to deck yourself out like a little lady leprechaun, by all means, be our guest, holiday enthusiasm is always infectious after all! However, if an all green ensemble isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you can’t go wrong with a LBG, little green dress! A fun and flirty shift dress, as seen here on the spring runways, would be ideal for this upcoming sunny Saturday; easy to wear during the day with a cute denim jacket and a simple transition into night with the addition of a chic clutch or pair of pumps.
Another idea is to incorporate just a hint of green into your normal look. A cute green camisole playing peek a boo underneath a collared shirt is sleek and sophisticated, while the addition of a fun green hair accessory or that bright teal bag you’ve been storing away, would all do the trick quite nicely.
If you are going green simply to avoid the inevitable pinching attacks from St. Pat’s day revelers and are not about to run out and go shopping for various shades of green that do not already comprise wardrobe, how about treating yourself to a manicure come Saturday? Pampering your hands with OPI’s ‘Green-wich Village’ would be festive as well as a treat for you! However you choose to celebrate, have a
fun and safe holiday from Pinkies!
With February 14th vast approaching, countless ladies are embarking upon the ‘what do i wear for Valentine’s Day question?’. Whether you have a significant other this year or not, most girls relish the opportunity to get a little dressed up! Think of it sort of like St. Patrick’s Day, a fun occassion to wear a pop of a specific color and get a little festive!
If you are one of the many women who treat V-Day as just another Tuesday, that still does not necessarily mean that your wardrobe can’t have a little extra pep in it’s step. Like the aforementioned holiday where everyone dons a little something green, try to incorporate a hint of red or pink into your ensemble. A good pair of jeans and a cute red cardigan can go a long way here; or even a little nuance to the day such as that great pair of red heels you’ve been dying to wear or a cheeky red bow are sure to capture the right essence! A fun pop of color might even make you feel a little extra special!
On the other hand, maybe you are planning on going all out in the wardrobe department for a romantic date or a night out with the girls. If this is indeed the case, by all means, dress up! Nothing spells Valentine’s Day quite like a fabulous red dress and a pair of heels, a la Taylor Swift, pictured here. There aren’t too many nights out of the year where you are encouraged, neh, almost expected to dress to the nines, so take advantage and have fun!
Now before you engage in whatever nightly activities you may be partaking in, why not stop by Pinkies for the ultimate treat? A manicure and pedicure! This is a sure fire great way to pamper your single self or get ready for your big night out! Painting on a classic red, like OPI’s ‘Affair in Red Square‘ is sure to get you in the Valentine’s Day mood, or at the very least, nice and relaxed!
Whatever you end up wearing, have fun with it, and above all else, have a happy holiday!
Everyone knows the most comfortable and chicest way to ease into winter fashion is with the unbeatable combination of sweater dress and boots. This go-to look can work for a varietal of occasions and settings, even a night out on the town! The key to mastering this already adorable ensemble is to make sure you have the right fit! Too long and baggy will be much too pajama party esque; while way too tight is way too much!
It being the chilliest of seasons and all; make sure you pick some equally cute tights for warmth! Patterns, bold colors and knit tights work best here, they give some attention to detail for the outfit without taking away from the oh so casual comfy nature of it. For the boots aspect, tall boots work best, but I have seen some stylish ladies pairing their
combos with sweet little ankle booties!
Choosing a muted color for your sweater dresses definitely takes the outfit into bono fide winter wear. In choosing such a palette, you also open yourself up to some amazing and very season appropriate nail polish colors! The brand new OPI ‘Touring America’ line is sure to turn heads and works perfectly with this trend. Gorgeous colors like, ‘Get in the Expresso Lane’, and ‘Honk if You Love OPI’ would make for a lovely complement. Time to get comfortable ladies!
Color lovers rejoice! Just because its’ fall, doesn’t mean you can’t pull of some of summer’s happier hues. Combining a muted neutral tone like gray and a vibrant color like plum is a fabulous combination for the season that will allow you complete versatility for office, evening, and casual outfits; not to mention that this particular color combo has been featured on fall runways the likes of Philip Lim and Mulberry.
The great thing about this fashion forward duo is that it is equally flattering to have gray on top as it is to wear it on the bottom. The key is simply to look for a slightly darker gray when shopping for pants and skirts. For work, a tweed gray dress with plum kitten heels would pop against each other perfectly! When out and about on the weekends (and if you’re feeling daring) try rocking some plum hued pants with a simple gray tee on top, understated, yet show stopping!
Our favorite thing about this soon to be go to color combination is the nail polish varietal it caters to! Since purple is so easily translatable from summer to fall (with varying shades of course!) finding the right shade for you is a cinch. From dark to light, Essie has some great options, like ‘Carry On’. For those of us who prefer to cater to the climate with our mani/pedis, the beautiful grey shade ‘Over the Edge’ is great for these long winter months ahead! Whatever
your preference may be, trying this daring duo on for size may just help make the cold weather a little prettier!
